The Code4Lib JournalISBN and QR Barcode Scanning Mobile App for LibrariesThis article outlines the development of a mobile application for the Ryerson University Library. The application provides for ISBN barcode scanning that results in a lookup of library copies and services for the book scanned, as well as QR code scanning. Two versions of the application were developed, one for iOS and one for Android. [...]

I am looking for a solution to scan ISBN (with my smartphone) and automatically search them in our catalogue. I need it for a very specific purpose: going through large amounts of books at fairs in a quick fashion. Only need to check availability.

I found an older Code4Lib article (see above) but I have no idea of coding and great optimism that there should be easier/newer solutions?

Any ideas appreciated, thank :)

@schlojj @librarians @libraries @librarythingtim I’m not sure if it has a solution for you, but if you don’t already know about it, LibraryThing might have something you could use.

@LilacsInMA @schlojj @librarians @libraries @librarythingtim seems like, if your catalog has the right API/z39.50 you could make a simple php search form that invokes the z39.50 search.
Or, just make it searchable through Library thing and use their interface?

@schlojj @librarians @libraries This is not a solution per se, but you might want to look at what the Internet Archive has done, since they published a minimal app that does very close to the same thing. help.archive.org/help/donate-b

@aarbrk hey thanks! we ended up using regular scan pistols and scanning from the web interface of our catalogue and I left it at that. i might write the IA at some point this week to see if they can explain how they did it, but as I was probably the only one at the @ibero_amerikanisches_institut interested in this solution and leaving in a octobre 😢
