Una volta, non molto tempo fa, nelle strade di Palermo risuonavano voci forti e appassionate che si mescolavano al suono di una chitarra e al fruscio della gente che si avvicinava curiosa.

Bastava un angolo di piazza, un cartellone dipinto a mano e una voce calda ed era come se il mondo si fermasse.

Erano i Cantastorie, figure che Palermo conosceva bene, ogni quartiere, dalla Kalsa al Capo, aveva il suo angolo dove questi artisti si fermavano a raccontare.

Non si limitavano a “cantare” storie, le facevano vivere, le sentivi nelle loro voci, nei gesti delle loro mani, negli occhi, narravano di amori perduti, di eroi coraggiosi, di santi e delinquenti, di fatti che erano accaduti davvero o magari no, ma che tutti amavano ascoltare.

One of the most impactful for me, when in my first time in this festival, was too see how the communities got together to form the groups for the parade, as well, as the high number of woman taking part on it.

On November 25, 2018, I was in Spain when I saw the news that Russian forces had seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in the Kerch Strait, near the Sea of Azov. I immediately began arranging logistics and traveled to the region. After obtaining the necessary accreditations from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides, I made my way to the frontlines of the conflict in the Donbas region, where Ukrainian forces were engaged in a tense standoff with Russian-backed separatists.

I embedded with Ukrainian soldiers and spent time living in a frontline bunker, documenting their daily routines and the low-intensity warfare that, even then, signaled the beginning of what would later become the full-scale invasion in 2022.
