I think the danger that #AI poses to primary web content creators is real and existential. #ChatGPT and #Gemini are *content aggregators* in the same way that Google News is. Instead of sending people to source websites, LLMs and other AI ingest, summarize, and remix (often unreliably) content it finds on the web, and act as though they were an authoritative voice on all manners of topics. #Enshittification carries on apace: writers have their content taken and used without allowing them to profit from visits or to build relationships with their consumers.

People using chatbots to search the web is already a thing. I know of at least one person who has abandoned search altogether in favor of asking ChatGPT. Not only will people get bubbled into whatever google indexes, people will get bubbled into however ChatGPT or Gemini is trained. It’s a scary prospect.

FlipboardMike McCue (@mike@flipboard.social)Quoting @caseynewton@mastodon.social who warned a year ago that Google was putting the web into a state of managed decline. "AI overviews have resulted in declines of 70 to 80 percent in the click-through rates to the web pages from which they derive their information. That’s 70 to 80 percent fewer visits to web pages..." https://www.platformer.news/safari-search-decline-apple-google/

Google are increasing the prices for Google Workspace customers (like myself) in order to offset the "rising prices" of "technology and infrastructure" - which I understand is in large part due to Google's big investments in generative AI (Google Gemini) and the cost of the related technology and infrastructure.

Google are forcing their existing customers to pay for it, since far too few people actally need or want this - and definitely do not want to buy it.

@lednaBM #Google #Gemini made up scripture meanings that the donkey owner would be paid for its use.

AI Overview
"In the New Testament, Jesus did not steal a donkey. Instead, he instructed his disciples to retrieve a donkey and its colt from a nearby village for his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He told the disciples to say, "The Lord has need of them," which was understood to mean he would be paying for their use. "

First, there is no such thing as "#ArtificialIntelligence". It's not artificial and it isn't intelligentce. As a pursuit, it is quite real, and what it produces is not intelligence, but detailed models based on huge amounts of related archived data. The important word here is "model". So every time you see output from #Gemini or #ChatGPT, put in your mind that it is a MODEL of a paragraph on a topic, a MODEL of a picture of a sparrow on a pear, a MODEL of #python code. 2/

"The $6.32 cost reported to run the aider polyglot benchmark on Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview 03-25 was incorrect. The true cost was higher, possibly significantly so. The incorrect cost has been removed from the leaderboard.

An investigation determined the primary cause was that the litellm package (used by aider for LLM API connections) was not properly including reasoning tokens in the token counts it reported. While an incorrect price-per-token entry for the model also existed in litellm’s cost database at that time, this was found not to be a contributing factor. Aider’s own internal, correct pricing data was utilized during the benchmark.

Unfortunately the 03-25 version of Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview is no longer available, so it is not possible to re-run the benchmark to obtain an accurate cost. As a possibly relevant comparison, the newer 05-06 version of Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview completed the benchmark at a cost of about $37."
