New CJK submissions to Unicode are handled by a different committee than the one that handles other characters. I get to see the latter in action, but it's fun to hear what's going on over in the CJK space! #MultilingualDH

Check out this delightful #MultilingualDH project my students have been working on for years now, looking at what works got translated in a Ukrainian literary journal during the Soviet and post-Soviet years. The data-wrangling is a slog, but the outputs are pretty remarkable for their research.

I just figured out that combing markerclusters with layers in #SPARQL queries visualising results from #Wikidata on maps can give you a nice coloured classification of periodicals by publishing language.

Today in #MultilingualDH failures: trying to submit a preprint to #arXiv. Somehow (well, we do know how), the platform is stuck in an anglophone hegemony of the 1980s: Insistence on the original TeX, no #unicode support and TeX character encoding for everything beyond plain #ASCII. And, of course, one has to debug and re-upload the TeX source for every single non-ASCII character their TeX engine stumbles upon. What a waste of my time and computing power

There's a lot to love here, but one of my favorite things about the new headings is how they embrace text beyond ASCII. Here's to Unicode and correctly representing the names of peoples, languages, cultures! #MultilingualDH
