They call it #DiamondOpenAccess, but similarities to #AaronSwartz vision for better #education are striking too hard to ignore them. Not limited by commercial #publishing interests, German borders or #citizenship, this is a huge step into the right direction of international #cooperation and #solidarity. The diamond branding and hashtag confusion isn't necessary imho. Hope that English universities will consider to join this #OER revolution, or at least publish on a federated instance. In 2001, #Durbin introduced the #DreamAct w/Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), in an effort to create a path to #citizenship for younger #undocumented #immigrants who had been brought to the US as children. It never became #law, but it laid the foundation for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [#DACA] program, which was announced by President #Obama in 2012 & protected hundreds of thousands of immigrants from #deportation. #Trump has tried to end the program, & it remains under legal threat.
#Durbin’s departure will reverberate in the #Senate, where he played a prominent role on a host of big issues & was considered a forceful advocate of party positions. He was among the first to push for a path to #citizenship for some #undocumented immigrants brought to the #UnitedStates illegally as children, a group that came to be known as #Dreamers that became the focal point of successive failed efforts to overhaul #immigration laws.

Federal district court judges in 3 different states have forcefully rejected that view & blocked #Trump's executive order voiding #BirthrightCitizenship. And 3 separate appeals courts have refused to unblock those court orders. Judge John Coughenour, a Reagan appointee in Washington state, was the first judge to block Trump's EO, calling it "blatantly unconstitutional."
The #14thAmendment of the #UnitedStates #Constitution says: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States." #Trump, however, has long argued that there is no such thing as automatic #citizenship, at least not for *all* children born in the #US.
The court gave no indication that it plans to consider another related question raised by the #Trump admin, which complained to the court about the ability of single district court judges issuing rulings that cover the entire country.
To date, EVERY COURT that’s considered the EO banning #BirthrightCitizenship, has blocked it. But he has persisted in his contention that birthright #citizenship is unconstitutional, an idea widely considered fringe. #SCOTUS ruled to the contrary 127 yrs ago.
