This is Siaja, heroine of North of North, a Canadian comedy that debuted on the CBC earlier this year and is now streaming on Netflix. “Us” in this case is Ice Cove, a fictional Arctic village in Nunavut, the northernmost territory in Canada. Though the series was filmed in Nunavut’s capital, Iqaluit, the map we see when Siaja is introducing us to her world puts Ice Cove roughly on the uninhabited Prince Wales Island.

New translation up on @igd_news: First Call for the Mesoamerican Caravan for the Climate and Life

"The climate crisis advances unstoppably, and with it, the devastation of our territories, our cultures, and our very lives. Dispossession, extractive megaprojects, and structural violence stalk us with greater intensity every day. In the face of this planetary emergency, we respond with unity, resistance, and hope.

"This caravan will be a space of encounter and mobilization for the peoples and communities that fight in defense of Mother Earth and of territories. We will unite our voices and forces to resist violence, make visible the biodiversity and cultural plurality of our peoples, and denounce the financial system that perpetuates destruction and dispossession."

North of North has dropped on Netflix today.

It’s an absolute joy of a show that looks misogyny, settler paternalism and intergenerational trauma directly in the eye but still leaves one feeling delighted, cheering on Siaja’s journey as a young ‘modern Inuk woman’ episode by episode.

A CBC-ATPN coproduction with Netflix, it ran weekly on CBC Gem earlier this year in Canada.

It deserves all the viewing minutes globally.

Starting a rewatch is what I needed this week.

Never mind that we receive zero percentage on the collection of tolls.

If we wanted to drive the turnpikes for free, we wouldn't have an entire fleet of tribal vehicles, that get their Pike Pass first thing. We wouldn't have thousands of tribal citizens with Pike Passes. The killing of SB 675 is a win for tribal consultation, and a loss for authoritarian, one-size-fits-all state and tribal governance.

#Mvskoke Principal Chief David Hill:

More divisive and ignorant rhetoric from the Governor. It's not the first time we've heard this, trust me.

'Indians get everything for free! Indians don't pay taxes! They get free college!' And now, it seems the new one 'The Creeks want to drive on the turnpikes for free!'

The same turnpikes that were built on our Reservations? That bear our names? That we were never consulted with on during their concept or construction?

Local people have travelled the same route for generations.

A British adventurer has apologised after her claims to be the first woman to traverse Canada’s largest island solo were dismissed by members of the Inuit population who criticised her dangerous “privilege and ignorance”.

Hempleman-Adams, 32, covered 150 miles (240km) on foot and by ski while pulling a sledge across Baffin Island, Nunavut, in temperatures as low as -40C and winds of 47mph.
