Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"In February, I released Find IDF Soldiers, a database containing profiles of Canadians that have joined the Israeli military.</p><p>Many of the soldiers attended Jewish schools in Canada, and sometimes attributed their decision to join the Israeli military in part to their time at these institutions. A subsequent review of the schools in question — including curricula, mission statements and activities — revealed many openly support the Israeli military and celebrate students who join it.</p><p>To better understand how these schools may help influence students to join the Israeli military, I spoke with 13 former students and the parent of a young student about what they experienced. What we are seeing has nothing to do with keeping Jews safe, and everything to do with crushing dissent."</p><p>"Thousands of Jews on campuses across the country have spoken out in solidarity with the people of Gaza and we will not be silent," Beckwith-Cohen vowed.</p><p>JVPA political director Beth Miller contended that "the far-right does not care about Jewish safety."</p><p>"Trump and his allies in Congress are platforming neo-Nazis and Christian nationalists, all while pretending to care about antisemitism in order to take a hatchet to our communities and most basic freedoms," Miller added. "This is intended to silence the Palestinian rights movement, sow chaos, and sharpen authoritarian tools that will then be used to dismantle civil liberties and democracy itself."</p><p>Alright there's a lot of absolutely wild shit going on here, all of which contribute to the stunning DARVO-esque fascist unreality being created by this spectacle; so we've got to go through it all. </p><p>- Yes multiple GOP members sitting on this commission are either racists or antisemites themselves; including the chair, Michigan's own Tim Walberg who suggested during a recorded town hall that Israel should nuke Gaza like "Hiroshima and Nagasaki" after October 7th. Using an expansive definition of antisemitism that conflates opposition to Zionism and Israeli crimes against Palestine with antisemitism, the Republicans managed to extract groveling apologies from the University Presidents, who supported Republican lies and threw the free speech rights of their students and faculty to the wolves without too much provocation. </p><p>- Numerous Jewish students and anti-genocide activists accused the GOP members of the committee of appropriating Jewish pain and identity to justify a campaign of ideological policing, authoritarian repression, and illegal kidnapping of student protestors. This matters because while the Trump regime and pro-genocide mainstream media outlets have worked very hard to portray anti-genocide student protests as inherently antisemitic, the fact is that Jewish Americans are massively overrepresented in the anti-genocide protest movement on college campuses. Their voices are consistently erased from the discourse by an establishment working hard to manufacture consent for a US-backed genocide being conducted by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.</p><p>- As former ACLU national legal director David Cole pointed out, anti-Israel advocacy and even actual antisemitic speech are still protected under the First Amendment; although obviously hate crimes and threats are not. Professor Cole also mentioned the disturbing parallels between this hearing and the House Un-American Activities Committee sessions from the days of McCarthyism. Finally, Cole drew the obvious connection between the GOP member's arguments and the Trump regimes larger authoritarian attempt to ideologically police and take academic control of American universities.</p><p>- Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar also pointed out the direct connection between the committee's activities and the Trump regime's ongoing campaign of kidnapping, detainment, and attempted deportation of noncitizen activists to suppress anti-genocide protest and speech. Images of the update process, known as a trusted build, were later shared online and at a 2021 “symposium” on the 2020 election results hosted by Lindell — around the same time state officials arrived at the Mesa County clerk’s office to investigate."</p><p>I don't want to rehash the Trump cult's 2020 election denial schemes, but Tina Peters is the former clerk in Mesa County, Colorado who engineered an elaborate plot to let some yahoo connected to billionaire Trump-humping conspiracy crank Mike Lindell have access to voting machines during a software update meeting; she wasn't charged for he political beliefs, or even election denial, she's literally in jail for helping some fashy rando access voting machines illegally by impersonating an employee with clearance to access the machines, and lying about it to get him inside. Naturally, the Trump regime fucking loves this lady and I'm assuming the only reason she wasn't already pardoned by Trump is that she was convicted under Colorado state law and thus a federal pardon does her no good. As the article notes, the Department of Justice *has* gone as far as inserting itself in a highly political and partisan way in Peters' ongoing appeals process. </p><p>What's more interesting to me here however, is examining Trump's Truth Social post in the proper context; specifically as a piece of fascist propaganda that is disturbingly reminiscent of narratives manufactured by the German Nazi Party during Hitler's rise to power. </p><p>The depiction of Peters as a courageous political prisoner unjustly being punished for merely stating her belief that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, which is in and of itself a piece of false fascist propaganda often referred to in the media as "the big lie" in a nod to statements by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, is extremely reminiscent of interwar period Nazi propaganda about the purported persecution of violent Nazi street activists convicted of breaking German laws to further Hitler's cause. The portrayal of Peters' prosecution as a vast political conspiracy, and the conflation of Trump's milquetoast center right opposition with a "radical" (and presumably dangerous) left is also pretty much exactly how the Nazis portrayed efforts to hold them accountable on their way to absolute power. Finally, while I'm sure the inclusion of "Communist" will be shrugged off by most observers as Trump doing drunk grandpa Bircher things, I think it's much more likely given the context of the rest of the message, that this is a fascist dog-whistle to the nazi conspiracy theory known as "cultural marxism" - in which pretty much everyone opposed to them from equality activists, to "liberal" capitalist political figures, are all part of a gigantic Marxist (read: Jewish) plot to undermine America, capitalism, and "the white race."</p><p>Look, I get that Trump is absolutely not a student of Joey Goebbels and Nazi propaganda techniques; it's obvious that someone in the regime is feeding him these ideas.
