Join us for Doors Open Toronto!

Visitors to the observatory will have an opportunity to view our 1-metre and 60-centimetre telescopes, speak with astronomy students, learn what it means to be an astronomer, find out about the latest research and discoveries. There will be guided tours of the building, along with a special Observatory Treasure Hunt.
Smaller portable telescopes will be available for visitor use, weather permitting.

Who doesn't love space? It captures our imaginations and makes us wonder if we are truly alone. This is a great Doors Open option for young visitors and the young at heart.

Visitors should note that there are dim light conditions and stairs-only access (unfortunately no lifts or ramps are available) in the observatory and sturdy close-toed shoes are recommended.

Last admittance will be at 4:30 PM ET.

The only prerequisite is a basic mathematical and physical background, which does not go beyond the knowledge of integral and differential calculus. In this regard, this book aims to bridge the gap with the specialized literature available on the internet, allowing readers to benefit from it.
The first part traces the historical development that led to a detailed understanding of the nature of stars and their life cycles. The goal of the following chapters is to provide a pragmatic introduction to the physical processes that determine the structure and evolution of stars based on their fundamental parameters such as mass and chemical composition. It will show what can be learned from the analysis of starlight about stellar atmospheres, the fundamental role of the virial theorem in the lives of stars, and the nuclear processes deep inside stars that provide the energy that makes them shine. Finally, there will be an in-depth phenomenological look at the final stages of stellar evolution. This section will discuss states of matter that are far from experimental realization but whose properties can be, at least in principle, inferred from the observation of concrete objects such as white dwarfs or neutron stars. Exciting developments are still expected in this area in the future.

Mathias Scholz is hobby astronomer. He studied physics at the University of Rostock from 1981 to 1986.

We were witnessing a historic, dazzling auroral display on May 10th, 2024 at Lake Sammamish in Redmond, Washington, where the Northern Lights captivated and mesmerized the onlookers with their vivid colors and fast moving formations.
The dancing ribbons of light surrounded, enveloped us with vibrant colors, sometimes radiating directly overhead where the Big Dipper’s seven bright stars aligned with the Coronae (Corona Borealis or crown), a rare event, indeed.
The Corona is the most impressive type of aurora, when rays or rayed bands pass overhead to converge to a point to form a crown or corona. So we looked overhead and the aurora rays appeared to originate from one single point and radiated outwards, in alignment with Big Dipper.
Words escape me to describe how mind-blowing was this otherworldly, once in a lifetime experience, to witness the vivid display of the aurora borealis as the lights filled the night sky with swirls of purple and blue hues.
The natural phenomenon created an ethereal atmosphere, conveying the beauty of Earth's geomagnetic interactions with solar particles.

The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a brown cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom and a comparatively clear upper portion in blue. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The upper blue portion has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orange and brown cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys—an appearance similar to a mountain range. In the bottom left corner, a clearer area free of gas and dust appears black with speckled stars.
