Vanilla Mastodon has a character limit of 500. Hubzilla has a character "limit" that's so staggeringly high that nobody knows how high it is because it doesn't matter. (streams), from the same creator and the same software family as Hubzilla, has a character "limit" of over 24,000,000 which is not an arbitrary design decision but simply the size of the database field.<br><br>By the way: Both are in the Fediverse, and both are federated with Mastodon, so Mastodon's "all media must have accurate and sufficiently detailed descriptions" rule applies there as well unless you don't care if thousands upon thousands of Mastodon users block you for not supplying image and media descriptions.<br><br>In theory, I could publish a video of ten minutes, and in the same post, I could add a full, timestamped description that takes several hours to read. Verbatim transcript of all spoken words. Detailed description of the visuals where "detailed" means "as detailed as Mastodon loves its alt-texts" as in "800 characters of alt-text or more for a close-up of a single flower in front of a blurry background" detailed. Detailed description of all camera movements and cuts. Description of non-spoken-word noises. Genau das sehe ich bei meinen eigenen Bildern aber als notwendig an.<br><br>Das Problem ist hier nur: Zumindest Erklärungen gehören niemals in den Alt-Text. Manche Menschen haben körperliche Behinderungen, die es ihnen unmöglich machen, Alt-Texte aufzurufen. So for brevity reasons, it <em>must not</em> be mentioned.<br><br>Any other media <em>must</em> be mentioned, whether it's a painting, a screenshot from a social media app, a scanned analogue photograph, a flowchart, a CAD blueprint, a 3-D rendering or whatever.<br><br>But an alt-text must <em>never</em> start with "Image of", "Picture of" or "Photo of". That's considered bad style and a waste of characters and screen-reading time. PaulaToThePeople<p>Did you ever notice how media descriptions often describe a "young woman"?<br>"young man" is a term that doesn't appear in media descriptions nearly as often and "old" is also less often used to describe people in AltText.</p><p>My theory is that its internalized sexism. Why would I feel bad about text that I couldn't transcribe and then try to find a source for that piece of text? And yes, I do.<br><br>Why would I be literally the only one in the entire Fediverse who tries to tell people that and why explanations don't go into the alt-text because people with certain disabilities can't access alt-text, and any information that's only available in alt-text is lost to them?<br><br>And why would I warn sensitive people about eyes or food that's in the image on a microscopic sub-pixel level if I didn't care? It has to actually describe the image. So much is clear to me.<br><br>And I guess that while at least some blind people in the Fediverse treasure whimsy higher than accuracy, others may want alt-text to be accurate.<br><br>But it looks to me like there is a rather narrow margin between alt-text with not enough details and alt-text that's too long and/or too detailed. This isn't communicated anywhere. It's unclear, too, whether that margin is always the same, or whether it shifts with the content of the image, the context and someone's individual idea of who the audience of an image post is.<br><br>And seriously, there are images that simply cannot be described in a way that's perfectly ideal and useful for absolutely everyone out there. I've posted such images in the past, and my image descriptions must have broken all length records in the Fediverse. Das Fediverse lebt ja nicht bis in den hintersten Winkel die Mastodon-Kultur und ausschließlich die Mastodon-Kultur. Und das wird es auch nie, weil Mastodons Kultur den technischen Features im Rest des Fediverse widerspricht.<br><br>Nicht nur Newbies wissen nichts von Alt-Text. Wenn z. B. jemand 2011 auf diaspora* angefangen hat, 2013 nach Friendica gewechselt ist und seit 2019 auf Hubzilla ist, dann sind das 13 Jahre im Fediverse, länger, als Mastodon überhaupt existiert. Aber es kann durchaus sein, daß so jemand nie mit Mastodons Kultur in Berührung gekommen ist.<br><br>Wenn er dann von einem Mastodon-Nutzer angeschnauzt wird, was er doch für ein ableistisches Dreckschwein ist, daß er keine Alt-Texte schreibt, dann weiß er erstmal gar nicht, worum es eigentlich geht. Mit Recherche und Nachfragen ergibt sich dann das Bild von irgendeiner komischen Mastodon-Modeerscheinung. Und was von Mastodon kommt, muß man ja auf etwas, das älter ist als Mastodon (Hubzilla ist von 2015), nicht nachäffen. Das ist dann die Reaktion.<br><br>Die andere Sache ist: Friendica und Hubzilla haben nicht so ein nettes Alt-Text-Eingabefeld wie Mastodon. Um da einen Alt-Text an ein Bild zu hängen, muß der Einbettungs-BBcode händisch umgebaut werden. Das heißt, wenn es da keinen Alt-Text gibt, kann es auch daran liegen, daß jemand nicht weiß, daß man auf Hubzilla überhaupt Alt-Texte eintragen kann, geschweige denn wie. Und auf Friendica ist das möglicherweise sogar verbuggt, was keiner meldet, weil es keiner nutzt.<br><br><em>(Für die Akten: Ich beschreibe alle meine Bilder und erkläre sie sogar. Und zwar seit mehr als einem Jahr so aufwendig und detailliert, daß ich pro Bild je nach Bild auch mal von mehreren Stunden bis zu zwei Tage brauche, vorherige Planung nicht inbegriffen. Mein Problem ist eher, daß es keine Möglichkeit gibt, im größeren Rahmen mit anderen Fediverse-Nutzern zu diskutieren, wie Bildbeschreibungen in extremen Randsituationen am besten auszuführen sein sollten. But it seems like that within Mastodon itself, at least 95% of all posts originate from Mastodon. Maybe even more.<br><br>There are several reasons for this.<br><br>First of all, other projects don't federate with Mastodon that much.<br><br>Misskey is huge in East Asia, especially Japan. And Japanese Misskey users who hardly know English or not at all won't be interested in connecting with Western Mastodon users, so a large chunk of the second-biggest free project in the Fediverse is out of the equation.<br><br>Lemmy is the third-biggest, but Lemmy federates with Mastodon only barely so, also because Lemmy is all about discussion groups and enclosed conversations, both of which Mastodon simply doesn't support. Lemmy users can't follow Mastodon users because Lemmy users <em>can't follow users</em>, full stop. And Mastodon users have to wrap their minds around how to federate with Lemmy. It isn't as straight-forward as communication within Mastodon. And so they simply don't.<br><br>Other examples include Hubzilla and (streams) channels having ActivityPub off on purpose to keep ignorant and obnoxious Mastodon users out.<br><br>But this goes the other way as well. Mastodon can be outright hostile to non-Mastodon users. Why? Because they don't behave like what Mastodon users are used to from Mastodon and, by extent, partly also Twitter. And they have joined the Fediverse in expectation of something that's one big distributed but homogenous Twitter clone. Anything that deviates from that may be disturbing.<br><br>There are Mastodon users who, upon seeing a post with over 500 characters, and be it in the federated timeline, <em>block the poster</em>. This alone cuts into the reach of everything that isn't Mastodon. Not few wish for a switch with which they can permanently filter out all posts with over 500 characters.<br><br>Others may block everyone who uses text formatting. Either it simply goes on their nerves. Or they can't imagine that it's even possible to format text in the Fediverse because they can't do that on Mastodon, so they think it's all some Unicode trickery. And as this Unicode trickery is not accessible and inclusive because it irritates screen readers, they deem whoever uses text formatting ableist and therefore blockworthy.<br><br>Then there's the issue of content warnings. They must be provided the Mastodon way, or you risk being blocked. However, not everything out there provides a) the right text field with b) the right label on it. Non-Mastodon projects may still label the summary field a summary field instead of a CW field like Mastodon does.<br><br>Friendica, for example, has done away with that text field entirely and users BBcode tags instead. Hubzilla doesn't provide any means of adding a summary/a Mastodon CW to a reply. And both have had their own way of adding CWs since long before there was Mastodon which their own users consider vastly superior to Mastodon's way.<br><br>In general, boosts are very important on Mastodon. I'd say that most activity on Mastodon is boosts because they're so easy to do on a phone without a hardware keyboard. Your reach on Mastodon depends on boosts.<br><br>But if you don't play exactly along Mastodon's written and unwritten rules, and if you don't adhere to the "Fediquette" which is entirely defined by only Mastodon users and geared towards only Mastodon's features (or lack thereof), you're boosted far less.<br><br>If you post more than 500 characters at once, it takes a lot for your post to get boosted.<br><br>If you post an image without alt-text, the post will be boosted dramatically less because not exactly few Mastodon users refuse to boost image posts without alt-text. You may even be muted or blocked for not providing alt-text. I don't have any character limit to worry about. Before I run out of characters, my posts grow so long that Mastodon rejects them, and AFAIK, Mastodon rejects anything over 100,000 characters.<br><br>That long description in the post contains all necessary explanations and transcripts of all text within the borders of the image. I need that description in the post because it's magnitudes too long to work in alt-text anywhere in the Fediverse.<br><br>But only an image description in a post might not satisfy the alt-text police who absolutely demand there be a useful alt-text with a good image description for each image. After all, they can't see the long description right away because the whole post is hidden behind a summary and content warning.<br><br>So I write an additional, much shorter image description just for the alt-text.<br><br>Also in the alt-text, after the short image description, there is a note that a full and more detailed image description with explanation and text transcripts in the post. If you're on Mastodon, Misskey or any of their forks, it is hidden behind a summary and content warning. If you're on Pleroma, Akkoma, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) or anything else that supports in-line images, it follows right after the image.<br><br>That is, "short" is relative. As of recently, my alt-texts either reach the 1,500-character mark precisely, or they stop short of one or two characters.<br><br>I can only do without the long image description in the post when I post memes based on existing templates. The image description doesn't have to be so long and detailed, and it fits into the alt-text.<br><br>I'm still not sure whether I'll still put all explanations to understand the meme and its own explanation into the post, or whether I'll switch to simply linking to Web sites that explain these things such as <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">KnowYourMeme</a> or the <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Main_Page" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Join the Fediverse Wiki</a>.<br><br>Both would be inconvenient in their own ways, either the inconvenience of external links or the inconvenience of tens of thousands of characters of explanations in one place. But links would be much less work for me, and my meme post output would be higher. The image is not so exotic that I need to describe every last detail. Still, the image description might be lacking because I haven't described what Boromir looks like (age, skin tone, hair colour, hair length, hairstyle, clothes). Mein Stream ist kuratiert, und ich versuche, ihn thematisch so zu spezialisieren wie meinen ganzen Kanal, damit die Menge an Nachrichten nicht überhand nimmt und ich nicht ständig durch einen Wust an Off-Topic-Kram waten muß.<br><br>Jetzt schon haben 85% meiner Kontakte keine Berechtigung, mir Posts zu schicken, und von den übrigen 15% filtere ich bei so einigen die Boosts raus. Teilweise habe ich bei sehr aktiven Leuten sogar individuelle Wortfilter, die uninteressanten Content aussperren.<br><br>Ich habe auch erklärt, inwiefern Hubzilla anders ist als Mastodon: Auf Mastodon siehst du nicht, wieviele ungelesene Nachrichten du hast. Du machst deine Timeline auf und scrollst runter, solange du Zeit und Bock hast. Und wo du keine Zeit und/oder keinen Bock hast hinzuscrollen, das liest du dann eben nicht.<br><br>Hubzilla hat aber einen Zähler für ungelesene Nachrichten und eine Liste ungelesener Nachrichten. Da kann man die ungelesenen Nachrichten threadweise aufrufen. Ich sehe also immer, wieviele ungelesene Nachrichten ich habe.<br><br>Ich habe gesagt, so oder so habe ich keinen Bock, mir Kontakte ans Bein zu binden, die meinen Stream ums Mehrdutzendfache mit für mich im Rahmen der Themen meines Kanals völlig uninteressanten Müll aufblähen. Ich sagte, ich könnte die ungelesenen Nachrichten natürlich erstmal rausfiltern, die von potentiell interessanten Kontakten zuerst lesen und die von definitiv uninteressanten Kontakten hinterher ungelesenermaßen als gelesen markieren, aber das kann's ja auch nicht sein.<br><br>Daraufhin hat er mich als Rassisten bezeichnet.<br><br><blockquote>D) Wenn jemand ein Politikum draus macht und seine Beiträge aus Prinzip aufbläht, obwohl seine Nachricht nur 300 Zeichen Information und 6000 Zeichen Redundanz enthält, kann möglicherweise ein Hinweis kommen, sich kurz zu fassen (allerdings praktisch noch nicht erlebt).</blockquote><br>Ich habe zwar keine konkreten Beispiele, aber es gibt Mastodon-Nutzer, die regen sich schon über 2000 Zeichen am Stück von <em>tatsächlichem Inhalt</em> auf. Das bekomme ich aber meistens gar nicht und manchmal nur zufällig mit, weil sie das ähnlich wie auf Twitter machen, meine überlangen Posts verlinken, darüber abstänkern und mich nicht mal erwähnen, damit ich das nicht merke.<br><br>Und ja, das gibt's im englischsprachigen (wo ich mich überwiegend aufhalte) wie im deutschsprachigen Fediverse.<br><br>Wahrscheinlich ist es für mich tatsächlich riskanter, Bilder in meinen Posts so angemessen ausführlich zu beschreiben und so notwendigermaßen ausführlich zu erklären, wie ich es tue, als sie überhaupt nicht zu beschreiben und zu erklären. Letzteres führt nur dazu, daß meine Bilderposts nicht geboostet werden, aber wer boostet die schon? Vielleicht kommt alle Jubeljahre jemand und fordert mich auf, einen Alt-Text zu schreiben. Ich beschreibe normalerweise jedes Bild zweimal. Einmal vergleichsweise kurz (oft immer noch deutlich über 1000 Zeichen) und rein visuell im Alt-Text. Und vorher einmal sehr ausführlich und detailliert mit Erklärungen und Text-Transkripten im Post.<br><br>Ich habe ja kein 500-Zeichen-Limit. Ich habe gar kein Zeichenlimit für Posts. Also packe ich auch schon mal <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/f8ac991d-b64b-4290-be69-28feb51ba2a7" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">über 60.000 Zeichen an Beschreibung</a> für ein einzelnes Bild in den Post, der auch das Bild enthält.<br><br>Mich hat schon ein paarmal jemand gefragt: "Warum lädst du die lange Beschreibung nicht irgendwo gesondert hoch und verlinkst sie dann? Dann sind deine Posts nicht so monströs lang."<br><br>Weil, soweit ich das von anderen Quellen her beurteilen kann, die Beschreibung und Erklärung eines Bildes nicht irgendwo extern liegen und verlinkt sein sollte. Die sollte immer da sein, wo das Bild ist. Text-Transkripte sowieso. Und Text-Transkripte müssen bei mir in eine visuelle Beschreibung des Bildes eingebaut sein, damit die Leute auch wissen, wo der Text drauf ist, z. B. ein Schild, ein Poster, ein Teleporter oder dergleichen.<br><br>Das, was ich so gelernt habe, übertrage ich jetzt auf Meme-Posts.<br><br>Ich werde nur eine visuelle Beschreibung brauchen, weil ich da nicht so ins Detail gehen müssen werde, und die wird in den Alt-Text passen.<br><br>Aber ich muß ja das Meme auch erklären, damit die Leute das verstehen. Klar könnte ich die Leute auch mit Links abspeisen oder sie gar googlen lassen. Aber das wäre nicht inklusiv. Inklusiv ist nur, wenn man alles direkt im Post erklärt.<br><br>Wenn ich jetzt also ein Bildmakro poste, auf dem Boromir "One does not simply implement FEP-ef61" sagt, habe ich sehr viel zu erklären.<br><br>Ich muß natürlich erklären, warum er das sagt und was er meint.<br><br>Dann muß ich das Template erklären. Dazu muß auch eine Erklärung gehören, was Imageboards sind.<br><br>So, dann muß ich erklären, was FEP-ef61 ist. Dazu gehört, daß ich erkläre, was nomadische Identität ist, denn FEP-ef61 soll nomadische Identität nach ActivityPub bringen.<br><br>Dann werde ich auch noch erklären müssen, was Hubzilla ist und was das streams-Repository ist, weil ich beide in meiner Erklärung von nomadischer Identität erwähnt habe. Ich weiß, daß drei von vier Mastodon-Nutzern noch nie von Hubzilla gehört haben.<br><br>Im Zuge dessen muß ich auch Friendica erklären und den ganzen Fork-Baum von Friendica bis Forte aufdröseln, um a) zu erklären, woher Hubzilla kommt, b) zu erklären, woher Red kommt, das ja als erstes nomadisch war, und c) zu erklären, woher das streams-Repository kommt.<br><br>Und das muß alles direkt im Meme-Post passieren. Das darf ich nicht extern verlinken. Klar könnte ich mir die Meme-Erklärerei sparen und einen einzelnen Link auf KnowYourMeme setzen, wie ich es früher getan habe. Das würde Stand jetzt über 11.000 Zeichen sparen. Aber das wäre nicht inklusiv.<br><br>Die Leute ziehen es einfach vor, alle Beschreibungen und Erklärungen direkt vor Ort am Bild zu haben. Also sollen sie die bekommen. Du mußt bedenken: Die meisten im Fediverse nutzen Smartphone-Apps. Jupiter RowlandI'm working on a new meme-posting format.<br><br>I haven't posted a meme with an image since around the turn of the year, and a lot has happened since then. The reason why I've stopped posting meme images is because I decided to no longer post images with potential triggers such as eyes or faces in plain sight, but for Mastodon users, Hubzilla leaves me no choice but to post images in plain sight. Unless I want to make them go through the extra hassle, click/tap a link and open the image separately. I can post meme images now; I've got two (streams) channels for that, and (streams) can make Mastodon blank out sensitive images.<br><br>Over the past eight years, however, I've improved my image-describing technique some further and raised my own standards. For example, I've learned that memes need to be explained so that everyone gets them. At the same time, I'm aware that externally linked sources of information are not inclusive, only providing all needed information right with the image is.<br><br>Just like with my virtual world pictures, I have to explain absolutely everything that I can't assume to be common knowledge. And this can actually end up being even more than when I post a virtual world picture. I guess I don't have to go all the way and explain the whole history of everything and give examples at the same level as KnowYourMeme. But I can't link to any external sources either. I've already mentioned that everything must be explained in the same place as the image. Besides, KnowYourMeme as a Web site isn't as reliable as I remember it anymore.<br><br>So on the one hand, I don't have to go through the entire history of the "One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor" meme. On the other hand, in order for people to understand the explanation of this meme, I also have to explain what a snowclone is. And I have to explain what an image macro is. And I have to explain what an advice animal meme is. And I have to explain what Something Awful is so that people understand my snowclone and image macro explanation digressions. And I have to explain what 4chan is and what imageboards are so that people understand my image macro and advice animal explanation digressions.<br><br>So my first new meme post with an image will come with...<br><ul><li>a explanation of the template<br><ul><li>a digression with an explanation of snowclones</li><li>a digression with an explanation of image macros</li><li>a digression with an explanation of advice animals</li><li>a digression with an explanation of Something Awful</li><li>a digression with an explanation of 4chan</li></ul></li><li>an explanation of this particular image macro<br><ul><li>a digression with an explanation of nomadic identity and its history</li></ul></li></ul>...in the post text body, right below the embedded in-line image.<br><br>All in all, I expect the explanations to have some 15,000 characters.<br><br>Since the image macro is based on what's essentially a real-life photograph, and the explanations are not tied to any visual description of the image in the post, I'll probably only need one image description in the alt-text. And it'll probably be short enough to leave room for the text transcripts and the note that there is an explanation in the post. In fact, I only have one template based on OpenSim in-world pictures, and these are fairly simple.<br><br>The first new meme image post will take especially long because I have to write all explanations from scratch. Later meme posts will save time because I can at least copy-paste the necessary but already available digressions, and eventually, I guess I won't have to write new meme digressions anymore. When I re-use a template I've used before, I can re-use its entire template explanation as well, and I'll "only" have to explain the context.<br><br>The context explanation will always require quite some work and some time, though, regardless of whether I meme OpenSim or the Fediverse. I can never expect everyone who comes across one of my meme posts to be well-informed enough about the Fediverse to get the joke. Die alte Dreifaltigkeit Titel, Zusammenfassung, Post?<br><br>Ich schrieb ja über Mastodon-Apps und Friendica, daß eine Mastodon-App irgendwas braucht, was genauso funktioniert wie Mastodons CW-Feld. Etwas, wo sie verläßlich immer eine CW reindrücken kann, so daß die dann genauso verläßlich wie auf Mastodon als CW funktioniert. Und zwar, ohne auf irgendwelche projektspezifischen Spezialitäten eingehen zu können.<br><br>Die App muß Friendica immer 100% verläßlich blind wie Mastodon "bedienen" können.<br><br>Natürlich kann man auf Friendica den Titel als Zusammenfassung/CW nehmen. Aber zum einen muß das eingestellt werden. Zum anderen muß die App dann die CW ins Titelfeld eintragen. Eine Mastodon-App wird aber stur versuchen, die CW ins Zusammenfassungsfeld zu drücken, ob da jetzt eins ist oder nicht.<br><br>Wenn sie jetzt die CW ins Titelfeld eintragen soll, dann ist das ein Friendica-Spezialfeature. Wenn sie selbsttätig aus den Einstellungen erkennen soll, ob die CW in den Titel eingetragen oder z. B. als BBcode realisiert werden soll, ist das erst recht ein Friendica-Spezialfeature.<br><br>Ich weiß nicht, vielleicht kann Fedilab das. Aber die ganzen praktisch reinen Mastodon-Apps, die von Leuten entwickelt werden, die ihren Lebtag von Friendica noch nie auch nur gehört haben, die können das nicht.<br><br>Eine rein gegen Mastodon entwickelte App wird wiederum für Alt-Text ein Textfeld anbieten, das den Alt-Text in ein Bild einträgt, das an einen Post als Datei angehängt ist. So läuft das nämlich auf Mastodon und nur so.<br><br>Mein letzter Informationsstand ist, daß genau das aber auf Friendica nicht geht. Wenn man da Alt-Text haben will, muß man das Bild erst hochladen, dann in-line in den Post einbetten und dann den Alt-Text in den BBcode eintragen.<br><br>Theoretisch ginge das auch mit einer App. Aber das wäre wieder ein Friendica-Special-Feature.
