50+ Music<p>"Jessica" is an <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/instrumental" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>instrumental</span></a> piece by American rock band <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/theAllmanBrothersBand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>theAllmanBrothersBand</span></a>, released in December 1973 as the second <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/single" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>single</span></a> from the group's fourth studio album, <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BrothersAndSisters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrothersAndSisters</span></a> (1973). Written by guitarist <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/DickeyBetts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DickeyBetts</span></a>, the song is a tribute to <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/gypsyJazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gypsyJazz</span></a> guitarist <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/DjangoReinhardt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DjangoReinhardt</span></a>, in that it was designed to be played using only two fingers on the left hand. Betts wrote the majority of "Jessica" at the band's farm in <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Juliette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Juliette</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Georgia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Georgia</span></a>. <br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRE3Bv1goyI" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">youtube.com/watch?v=NRE3Bv1goyI</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
50+ Music<p>"Ramblin' Man" is a song by American rock band <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/theAllmanBrothersBand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>theAllmanBrothersBand</span></a>, released in August 1973 as the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/leadSingle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leadSingle</span></a> from the group's fourth studio album, <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/BrothersAndSisters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrothersAndSisters</span></a> (1973). Written and sung by the band's guitarist, <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/DickeyBetts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DickeyBetts</span></a>, it was inspired by a 1951 song of the same name by <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/HankWilliams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HankWilliams</span></a>. It is much more grounded in <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/countryMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>countryMusic</span></a> than other Allman Brothers Band compositions, which made the group reluctant to record it. <br><a href="https://youtu.be/LUXRjfHoVl4" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/LUXRjfHoVl4</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Flipboard Culture Desk<p>Dickey Betts, cofounder of the Allman Brothers Band, died last week. In this essay for Paste, Matt Mitchell remembers his work on "Eat a Peach" and "Brothers and Sisters." "I contend that, between February 1972 and August 1973, there was no greater rocker walking among us than Dickey Betts," Mitchell writes. "Most musicians would kill to write 'Blue Sky,' 'Jessica' and 'Ramblin’ Man' over the course of a long career; Betts did it in just 16 months’ time, a creative peak few musicians of his caliber, genre and longevity have ever paralleled."</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/WQkHSQ" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/WQkHSQ</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/DickeyBetts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DickeyBetts</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/AllmanBrothers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AllmanBrothers</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/RIP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RIP</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/InMemoriam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InMemoriam</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Essay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Essay</span></a></p>
