schuh<p>So, yes, sure, it's super convenient and desirable to have one-stop go-to places like ADS and arXiv to find and retrieve scientific literature.</p><p>But that's potentially vulnerable infrastructure. So maybe <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/SafeguardingResearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SafeguardingResearch</span></a> practices should also include increasing resilience by encouraging authors much more to additionally publish full-text versions of their papers in institutional publication repositories whenever possible. The hope would be that more distributed knowledge would be more difficult to wipe out all too quickly.</p><p>In Germany (as probably in many other countries) the "Zweitveröffentlichungsrecht" provides a framework for that. The law's scope is not all-encompassing, but it exists. My feeling is, however, that uptake by authors could be a lot better. The <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> movement has obviously been trying to push this for a long time, because being allowed to put research results anywhere where people can easily find and access them is inherently a good thing, period. Institutional administrators will have been pushing this because it's one of the things that help them track research output more comprehensively. Librarians are pushing this because it's simply the right thing to do.</p><p>Let's try harder still.</p><p>(Also, retain paper copies of journals in library archives everywhere.)</p><p><a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/ScientificPublishing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScientificPublishing</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Libraries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Libraries</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Repositories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Repositories</span></a></p>
