Amid turmoil over tariffs and the relationship with the United States, Canada is facing challenges from within. Conservative Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, says she will hold a referendum on provincial separation in 2026 if citizens gather the required signatures on a petition. While Smith says she isn't herself supportive of Albertan separation, her government last week introduced legislation making it easier for a referendum to happen. In her address, Smith claimed that Liberal rule has turned Canada into an international laughing stock. On Monday, Western Canada Select oil prices dropped to US$44.78/barrel, the lowest price it has seen since January 2021. Over the weekend OPEC announced it would increase output by 400,000 barrels per day. Sustained low prices will shut down the Alberta oil sands and dramatically reduces the royalties the Alberta government receives.

I am not one to boost up military stuff. As a planet we need to stop fighting wars. But that said, in an era where the USA is no longer a reliable partner and Canada might need to go its own way, the advent of remote controlled drones means we can have a lot more independence for our own defence like these small marine drones. Drone warfare is a fraction of the price of big complex machines, on air, land, or sea.
