The image depicts an old Roman arch known as Porta Aurea, which is located in Pola (Pula), a city that was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The photograph appears to be taken around 1877 by P.Z.Pola and shows the monument from street level with people standing or walking nearby.

The archway stands tall against an overcast sky, its large stone structure weathered but still imposing. It has classical architectural elements such as Corinthian columns on either side of the entrance. The top of the arc displays inscriptions that are difficult to read due to age and erosion. In front of it is a black wrought-iron fence which seems old.

Behind this historical monument, we see part of Pola's cityscape with buildings featuring green shutters. There are at least four individuals visible: one man in uniform standing by the fence wearing what appears to be a guard or official’s attire; another young boy and girl seem to be casually observing their surroundings from behind the fence.

The colors captured here suggest this photo was taken during daylight, possibly on an overcast day given the muted lighting. There are no discernible modern elements in sight which lends itself well to its vintage feel.
