#Trump, who has long accused #PBS & #NPR of *biased* [lie-free] coverage, signed an #ExecutiveOrder late Thurs seeking to end federal #funding for the 2 broadcasters. The immediate impact of the order was unclear. NPR & PBS get a small portion of their funds from #Congress through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, an #independent organization that funds #PublicMedia.

Like many, I grew up watching shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow and NOVA on #PBS. A couple of years ago, I had the honor of the local PBS station coming to my home studio to film a feature for a program called ArtsPlus through which I've been able to share my love for #pottery and the natural environment with a national audience. Non-commercial and educational, PBS is definitely worth fighting for.

Urge Congress: Save #PublicMedia Funding

The #Grifters running #Amerikkka are calling public media a grift! Probably because they embrace DEI and aren't afraid to criticize the #Fascist administration! This will not only cripple or destroy #PublicTelevision stations, #CommunityRadio like #WMPG also receives money from the #CPB!!!

White House calls #NPR and #PBS a “grift,” will ask Congress to rescind funding

By Jon Brodkin, April 15, 2025

Excerpt: "In a statement provided to Ars today, PBS CEO Paula Kerger said that 'the effort underway to get Congress to rescind public media funding would disrupt the essential service PBS and local member stations provide to the American people. There's nothing more American than PBS, and our work is only possible because of the bipartisan support we have always received from Congress... Without PBS member stations, Americans will lose unique local programming and emergency services in times of crisis.' "

McCarthy-ism is back, everyone.

The DOGE subcommittee in Congress is holding a hearing titled “Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the heads of NPR and PBS Accountable.”

Guess who is the chair? Marjorie Taylor Greene, of all the MAGA clowns

I'm in two minds about public media outlets like RNZ publishing the video they produce on YouRube;

youtube.com/channel/UCp4OXwfZE

It makes sense for publicly-funded media to publish anywhere that members of the public might be, especially where we don't have to pay. In fact, any media funded 100% with public money ought to be under a CreativeCommons BY-SA license, or even placed in the public domain. So *anyone* can publish it, anywhere they like.

Today, we reflect on the legacy of #NelsonMandela, who passed away #onthisday in 2013.

In 1994, just months after becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Mandela spoke at Howard University’s Commencement Convocation, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree. In his speech, Mandela celebrated the transformative power of education, acknowledging Howard’s historic contributions to progress.

Two podcasts from the early #PlanetMoney days with #ThisAmericanLife that were amazingly well done, and are still shockingly accurate and eye-opening on the US healthcare system.

I share these with folks often. But no one listens to them. No one cares. We are just as bad as the right in our unwillingness to be challenged. I don't dig populism.
