#Books including “To Kill a Mockingbird,”the novel by #HarperLee about #racism in the Depression-era South, were purged from #schools run by the #Defense Dept, acc/to a lawsuit filed by the #ACLU.
The #LibraryOfCongress, which describes itself as the world’s largest #library, is home to millions of items, w/collections of books on foreign languages & world history, as well as music, films & newspapers. It serves as the #research arm of #Congress & is open to the public.

• 394,000 students have experienced gun violence at school since Columbine
• There have been 428 school shootings since 1999, according to Post data
washingtonpost.com/education/i

• Arrest rates at schools with police present were more than double that of schools without police on-site
• GAO found that school-based arrest rates for Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Black, and American Indian/Alaska native students were 2-3x higher than White students.
• Students with disabilities had more than double the rate of arrests and referrals compared to their peers without disabilities.

I couldn’t find data confirming the 1 million arrests. However, google’s AI generated assist did confirm the 1 million arrests, claiming Wikipedia & Arizona state university at its source. And, from the following Education Week Article, 70,000 students arrests just in the 2013-2014 school year, and these only included a small sampling of schools.

#Trump, a [purely self-interested] #Republican, is also trying to #deport some pro-Palestinian #international #students at #US #schools, saying their presence could *harm* US #ForeignPolicy interests [utter crap].

The #protesters in the library also demanded the release of #MahmoudKhalil, a #Palestinian activist & #Columbia graduate student who remains in a Louisiana immigrant #jail after he was among the first to be #arrested for #deportation.

Many #students & #faculty justifiably feel that these #schools failed to take #harassment of #Jews seriously enough during the protests that erupted after the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on #Israel by #Hamas. By centering its critique on that issue, the #Trump admin was cannily appropriating for its own ends one of the progressive left’s highest priorities: protecting a minority from hostile acts.

Now, however, the mask is off.

#Professors & #teaching assistants increasingly found themselves staring at essays filled with clunky, robotic phrasing that, though grammatically flawless, didn’t sound quite like a #college student — or even a human. 2½ years later, #students at large state #schools, the Ivies, liberal-arts schools in New England, #universities abroad, professional schools, & community colleges are relying on #AI to ease their way through every facet of their #education.

In Jan 2023, just 2 months after #OpenAI launched #ChatGPT, a survey of 1,000 #college #students found that nearly 90% of them had used the chatbot to help w/ #homework assignments. In its first year of existence, ChatGPT’s total monthly visits steadily increased month-over-month until June, when #schools let out for the summer. (That wasn’t an anomaly: Traffic dipped again over the summer in 2024.)

“Soon this could be the case in #schools across the country. We’ve all heard stories of elite institutions cowering before President #Trump’s assault on #HigherEducation. Take it from someone who knows: It could get worse — far worse.

“Trump has been watching what’s transpired in #Florida. The architect of #Project2025’s #education policies has said that FL is 'leading the way' on #university overhauls.”

🔔 Update: 📢 The death toll from ISR warplanes targeting two #schools in Al-Bureij refugee camp and #gaza city, since last night and until dawn Wednesday, has risen to 49

When I see the morning crop of techbro fantasy insanity I think we are now beyond saveable. Todays headlines were

- #AI dead person court testimony
- darken the sun to combat #climatecrisis
- company towns (#westworld)
- Musk as the white saviour with multiple bald chemo kids (#genAI)
- NZ banning #socialmedia for teens
- 250 CEOs (ie capitalist profit makers) want AI in all the #schools and #academia. Well of course the do. Ben's vision of computational urbanism has come true.

Madness.

Today in Labor History May 5, 2018: Capping several weeks of teacher unrest across the country, public educators in Arizona won raises of 10 to 20 percent. Just prior to this, Oklahoma teachers struck for nine days and won roughly $6,000 in annual increases. And before that, teachers in West Virginia, won a five percent raise after their nearly two-week walkout. However, in almost all of the teacher strikes that occurred that year, the unions negotiated sell-out contracts that gave workers a fraction of what they demanded.

One man’s story: Paying off the $835 lunch debt at one school led to much more.

My daughter asked me recently why I spend so many evenings on the phone talking about school lunches. I told her about the kids who get their trays taken away. Her face scrunched up in that particular way that children’s faces do when they encounter an injustice so fundamental it cannot be reconciled with their understanding of how the world should work.

“That’s stupid,” she said with 7-year-old clarity. “Why don’t they just let them eat?”

HuffPost · I Randomly Decided To Pay Off A School’s Lunch Debt. Then Something Incredible Happened.By DJ Bracken

Civil Rights? "What's that?" Human Rights? "Duuuhhh!! Don't be woke"

"Remaking the OCR isn’t just about increasing caseloads and reordering political priorities. The Trump administration now is taking steps to roll back OCR’s previous civil rights work.

Last month, Trump issued an executive order that directs all federal agencies, including the Education Department, to stop enforcing cases involving policies that disproportionately affect certain groups — for example, when Black students are disciplined more harshly than white students for the same infractions or when students with disabilities are suspended more than any other group even though they represent a small percentage of student enrollment.

Trump’s order requires the agencies to “assess all pending investigations, lawsuits, and consent judgements” that consider disproportionate discipline and “take appropriate action.” Complaints made to the OCR that students were unfairly disciplined could be thrown out; existing enforcement actions or monitoring of schools that had disciplined students disproportionately could be revoked."
