5/ I use brass polish to clean a lot of faceplates, mostly because I once lived in an apartment with all brass door hardware, still have the polish, and one day decided to give it a go.
I’m sure there’s a better thing to use, and someone may tell me why using it is a terrible terrible thing, but it’s doing a heck of a job getting decades of cigarette smoke off the face of this thing, even on translucent plastic.

2/ One of the curiosities on the prototype of this #tektronix plug-in is the elapsed time meter on the bottom. It is not present on the production unit. There is a note that I cannot decipher with a date or February 16 1966.
This type of indicator is a Mercury Coulometer, and shows time elapsed using a chemical reaction which moves a drop of mercury in a capillary tube slowly and linearly as chemical reaction is caused by the passage of a small, fixed current.
This unit has a large number of reed relays, which have a finite lifespan, and I wonder if this meter was there to measure usage during testing.

I have a #Tektronix 3001GPX logic analyser that works fine, but most software is stored in an IDE (I think) 127-something hard disk. If it dies, the whole instrument becomes a large doorstop. I would like to record a disk image of it, is there any simple solution for that? I may put together a vintage PC just for it, but I’m not really into such systems. #retrocomputing

Looking back at the archive I downloaded from the #birdsite, I found some fun pictures. Those are from 2016, when I got a #Tektronix 576 curve tracer. It was designed to be #repaired! It even sported a roll of special soldering wire for the repairs. I love the notice "IT IS DESIRABLE THAT ONLY SILVER-BEARING SOLDER BE USED ON THE CERAMIC TERMINALS AND FOR THINNING THE IRON. ORDINARY TIN-LEAD SOLDER MAY BE USED BUT REPEATED USE WILL BREAK THE SOLDER TO CERAMIC BOND. SEE YOUR INSTRUCTION MANUAL"

My #Tektronix #tds700 series scope got its #gotek floppy emulator and it works great. Its not exactly fast, but I expected this.

I did not need the "reversing" flat flex cable as the original one is the correct type.

This thing is approaching 30 years, but its not that dusty inside.

The fan sometimes makes some bearing noises (will add a few drops of oil to the bearings soon).

I am mainly concerned about the NVRAM and RTC. Both contain coin cells embedded in the package so I need to desolder them, make a big plastic dremeling mess and add new coin cells. But first I need to find out how to dump the factory calibration... this is a new rabbit hole - yay.

Who can recommend a cheap spectrum analyzer? I have a #Tektronix SA2600 on my bench that is owned by my employer. The fan just failed, and it made me think. I'd like to get something inexpensive that would allow me to do my #electrical #engineering #ee work independently from my current employer. In the spirit of owning my own tools. I already have fume extraction, soldering, microscope, power supplies, bench meters, oscilloscope, etc. But I do a lot of #RF test related to modem development.
