Colour photo taken at a low angle, of wooden mooring posts and the side of a wooden pontoon in a canal. The water is a dull greyish green colour, and the wooden posts where they emerge from the water are covered with grey and green algae and barnacles, and leave their reflections on the water's gently rippled surface. In the foreground on the left is a pale brown post with a horizontal bar like the unfinished idea of a fence which almost reaches the centre of the frame. Stretching from the right of the frame, to almost but not quite join with it in the centre, is the pale grey pontoon. In the background through the mooring posts you can just make out the buildings on the other side of the canal, in white, grey and pale terracotta. The overall impression is of a confusion of horizontals and verticals, all in a very muted colour palette. The detail that stands out is on the side of the pontoon, on which has been printed, upside down and in the sort of lettering that is used on the side of old fashioned tea crates, the words "Fabriqué au Gabon" on a vibrant bright blue rectangle.

The arch at the top of the door has a black metal fanlight, and the rest of the door is divided into thirds by the same metal. The glass in the door is reflecting the view opposite like a mirror: in the background there are low red and ochre coloured houses under a pale peach sunset sky on the seafront across the turquoise canal, and in the foreground a black metal bridge with a person crossing it framed in the middle of the rightmost panel. There is a huge contrast between grey and black of the wall and the door itself, and the bright sharp colours of the reflection.

Colour detail photo of ornamentation on a wall: two ribbons of white marble with scroll designs, set in a dark red-brown stone, rise vertically from a white and brown speckled horizontal stone. To the left is a strip of ochre coloured plaster, and to the right exposed brick work where the ochre plaster has fallen away. The ornamented marble looks ancient, and probably is - many buildings in this area have their foundations in the 1200s - which contrasts with the much more modern plaster bits, and a thin white cable which runs horizontally along the bottom of the frame.

Colour photo, although you wouldn't know it because it is entirely in greyscale, of the searingly white sun burning through the clouds, an almost-circular blown-out patch of white just off centre of the frame. The sun's rays make pearl-grey lines across the clouds, which range in colour from smoke to charcoal. In the lower right hand corner of the image is the very top of a chimney stack, and a lamp post with an old-fashioned hanging lantern. Two seagulls soar in the sky above the sun, wings outstretched, one horizontal and one vertical, like lines of black ink.

This is a black and white portrait format image of an ornate colonnade in St Mark's Square in Venice. Light falls through the columns from left to right, highlighting the tiled floor. The angles in the image form a focal point to the middle right, and people are silhouetted against the daylight at the end of the colonnade. Taken with a Sony RX100.

A clothes line is suspended across a narrow sunny Venetian street, strung with various items of laundry in muted colours. In the middle of the line hangs a Spider-Man onesie, upside down, as if Spidey was hanging on by his feet and waving his arms in the air. It looks most incongruous in every way.

The metal is faintly ridged, and was originally bottle green, but there is only a small patch of that colour visible, the rest being stained and rusted and corroded in shades ranging from cream to ochre to the colour of dried blood. In the background, pale blue canal water under a pale blue sky, with a low seafront skyline of buildings behind and an out of focus small white motorboat in front.

Colour photo of a big arched window, just off centre of the frame. It has a quite plain white marble surround, and a very ornate metal scrollwork grille in front of it. Most of the photo is quite dingy in colour, the grille is dusty charcoal, the wall it is set in is stained and mottled grey and smoke coloured plaster, but there are three little spots of colour - two intrepid little bright green plants, one halfway up the left side and the other in the lower right corner of the window, and a small patch of bright terracotta brick in the upper right corner of the photo where a patch of plaster has fallen off the wall.

Elephanticide

On the side of the deconsecrated church of Sant'Antonin in Castello, there is something which looks like an odd bricked up opening, but it doesn't really look like a window nor a doorway.

The opening was made on March 16th, 1819, with the permission of the Patriarch, because of a slight problem with an elephant.
