This week NFDI4Chem was at the "Fellowship oft the Data" Meeting in Jena.
We had 2 days full of knowledge sharing, exchanging resources, learning from each other's experiences, and forging synergistic teams to better support researchers and stakeholders alike.
The photo shows Dr. Annett Schröter discussing our poster with Nicola Knight of Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI UK)

#Chemistry #Data Days 25
This year we have two clear topics: the first day is about ' #Research #Data #Management in #teaching’ with many practical contributions from lecturers who are successfully working in this field. The second day deals with ‘Tools for the entire digital life cycle’ and is aimed specifically at #chemists and related disciplines.

Today is World Backup Day!
Why this is important: Because we know researchers who have irretrievably lost half a year's research work due to data loss.
Take better care of your data to avoid losing it - and the time it takes to recover it
.
The 3-2-1 backup rule is a helpful and proven method.
Have you ever lost data?

Today is Document Freedom Day. We celebrate developments that support open standards and open formats.
Our contribution: repositories for open and FAIR data storage, workshops for FAIR research data management. And an open source laboratory journal "Chemotion ELN", which is specially programmed for the needs of chemists and supports the creation of open data.
We would like to congratulate the Rat für Informationsinfrastrukturen (#RfII) on its 10th anniversary!
Yesterday, this special birthday was celebrated in Berlin.
The history of #NFDI began with the RfII: In 2016, the Council formulated the need for a coordinated research data infrastructure for Germany. The recommendation paper ‘Performance from Diversity’ ("Leistung aus Vielfalt") can be regarded as the conceptual birth of NFDI.

Reminder: The Call for Submissions for the #CoRDI2025 is still open until 17 April.
Accepted submissions can result in both presentations and posters.
Submit now: https://www.nfdi.de/cordi-2025/call/
We are looking forward to your abstracts!

New Whitepaper published: "Measuring the Value of (Research) Data"
Data is more than just the "new oil"—it’s a unique economic asset with special characteristics that make its value challenging to measure. But how can businesses and research institutions quantify the actual value of their data?

File format building blocks: primitives in digital preservation
by @beet_keeper
A primitive in software development can be described as:
a fundamental data type or code that can be used to build more complex software programs or interfaces.
– via https://www.capterra.com/glossary/primitive/ (also Wiki: language primitives)
Like bricks and mortar in the building industry, or oil and acrylic for a painter, a primitive helps a software developer to create increasingly more complex software, from your shell scripts, to entire digital preservation systems.
Primitives also help us to create file formats, as we’ve seen with the Eyeglass example I have presented previously, the file format is at its most fundamental level a representation of a data structure as a binary stream, that can be read out of the data structure onto disk, and likewise from disk to a data structure from code.
For the file format developer we have at our disposal all of the primitives that the software developer has, and like them, we also have “file formats” (as we tend to understand them in digital preservation terms) that serve as our primitives as well.
