I start the last day of the #LIBER2023 conference in session 9: "Facing Forward: new user services" https://liberconference.eu/programme/parallel-session/session-9/. first up: "The post-pandemic desk service at university libraries – towards a hybrid future?" by Liv Inger Lamøy & Astrid Kilvik, library of NTNU, Norway.
"what is a digital library on zoom?" was the question the colleagues asked themselves after setting up a first online information desk at the beginning of the corona pandemic. so they started using different methods to find out. #LIBER2023 #userservices
some findings: at the physical and digital desk users ask different types of questions, the choice of physical/digital desk seems to depends on personal preference and convenience. #LIBER2023 #userservices
now the question is: how can they built a hybrid environment, transfering the quality from one form to the other and vice versa, to enrich both? aspects are e.g. the digital "undisturbness" and the physical "approachability". #LIBER2023 #usersivces
from the organizational point of view there are questions as well, like resources and priorities, because it's not just a new service, but an organizational change with different interests involved. #LIBER2023 #userservices #informationdesks
now up: @mattistoehr on "#vBIB (https://www.vbib.net/ & @vbib) – An open virtual event format from the community for the community". [disclaimer: I know this German conference event, and it's brilliant! :)] #LIBER2023
"inventing" the #vBIB began when the 2020 German librarians conference was cancelled due to the corona pandemic. especially colleagues in the twitter community wished for an alternative. so BIB & TIB teamed up and organized a virtual conference within 6 weeks. #LIBER2023
over the last 3 years #vBIB developed a thorough mission statement - and some uniqueness and specifities. :) I was too slow to take a photo of the technical infrastructure slide, but feel free to ask @mattistoehr about the set-up! #LIBER2023
.@mattistoehr 's #takeaways: be open, transparent, honest, simple, low-threshold, leightweight, experimental, inclusive, and supportive! #vBIB #virtualconferencing #networking #LIBER2023 ... and think about attending the #vBIB on december 6 & 7 2023! :) https://www.vbib.net/
3rd talk in this session: "Designing a database for a classical theatrical chatbot" by Anna Pappa, University Paris 8. the bot is called "LITTE_BOT". for some complementary information see e.g. these blog posts: https://blogs.ifla.org/arl/2022/12/03/litte_bot-a-theatrical-chatbot-conversing-with-molieres-dom-juan-through-dramaturgical-strategies/ + https://bnf.hypotheses.org/12976 #LIBER2023
one question from the audience: what could libraries do to support projects like this one? the answer: "do you know the Gutenberg project? that is brilliant! put text up there!" (https://www.gutenberg.org/ & @gutenberg_new) #literature #AI #chatGPT #etal #LIBER2023
@v_i_o_l_a @gutenberg_new also, we can read and load the audiobooks to Librivox. And use OpenStreetMap on our websites, to give directions. There are plenty of little actions that we librarians can do
@v_i_o_l_a @Nodami that’s a silly interpretation. The books are in the public domain, but if you charge for them, you may not use the name “Project Gutenberg”.
@gutenberg_new @Nodami ? the point is in not charging for them for open science.
@v_i_o_l_a @gutenberg_new am I missing something? What is silly interpretation? To read Public Domain books at Librivox? Or the bot Project at the BnF?
@v_i_o_l_a @gutenberg_new Unfortunately, the licence of the Gutenberg Project is in a very peculiar way non-free, including a viral licence for derived works and automated licence fees to the Project Gutenberg for any commercial use.
@jk @gutenberg_new ah! didn't know about that, as I have not worked a lot with the project. thank you for letting us know!
@v_i_o_l_a @jk @gutenberg_new I also didn't know that. So, we can not use books in Project Gutenberg freely for commercial projects? Somehow I feel I'm missing something
Ganz herzlichen Dank für diese wunderbare Real-Time-Berichterstattung, @v_i_o_l_a! Und danke natürlich auch @mattistoehr von der @tibhannover!
@v_i_o_l_a thanks so much for tooting and documenting insights of our #vBIB presentation at #LIBER2023.
@mattistoehr you're welcome! thanks for the interesting talk!
@v_i_o_l_a Wonderful!
@v_i_o_l_a @mattistoehr irgendwas mit #wiki #wikidata @wdscholia steht da auf einer Folie oben - brilliant! @JensB

@mattistoehr @librerli @v_i_o_l_a @wdscholia @vbib Vielleicht sollten wir mal eine Session ''#Wikiversifizierung der #vBIB' einreichen, #vBiB23!? Chris formal, ich als Sekundant https://diedatenlaube.github.io/Citizen_Science_in_den_Geschichtswissenschaften.html
